Tantalum is extensively used in products that require high reliability in extreme environments. The metal is commonly found in capacitors and super alloys that are applied in many electronics, automotive and aerospace products. More than half of the world’s tantalum is mined in Africa, including artisanal mining operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and its neighboring countries. Tantalum is covered by regulations related to “conflict minerals” in the United States and the European Union.
What We Do
The RMI provides tools and resources to help companies make sourcing decisions that improve regulatory compliance and support responsible sourcing globally, in accordance with the internationally recognized frameworks of the OECD Due Diligence Guidance and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
The RMI’s Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP) provides independent third-party assessments through an OECD-aligned industry mechanism for tantalum smelters. Tantalum smelters were the first adopters of the RMAP program and have been actively participating since 2010.
The RMI engages the tantalum industry, smelters and other stakeholders along tantalum value chains to promote complementarity of programs and support responsible sourcing initiatives in conflict-affected and high-risk areas.
